“The law requires an employee Handbook”
Fact or Myth?

Myth! However, employing people today without the benefit of a well-developed and easy to understand handbook is the business equivalent of entering the Indianapolis 500 in a Prius—you are going to lose. This fact applies not only in heavily regulated states like California and New York, but can happen anywhere an employee can challenge a policy or practice that is unclear or undefined.

Now, more than ever, lawsuits are a major concern for employers. Trends show employee claims and lawsuits escalate during downsizing and economic difficulties. Discrimination, wrongful termination, wage and hour, and harassment claims become a source of potential income for unhappy or insecure employees.

The Solution

Although no handbook can anticipate every imaginable situation, a carefully researched and prepared, up-to-date book can help you minimize risk and protect your assets while providing valuable information to your employees.

This training session will help you focus on the project of developing or updating your employee handbook and avoiding the common mistakes that leave your organization vulnerable.

Our senior HR professionals, who have developed hundreds of customized employee handbooks for a wide range of industries, will walk you through the following topics:

  • Understanding what policies are considered mandatory, optional, or a best practice
  • Handbook hasn’t been reviewed or updated in several years
  • California is unique, what do I do if the company has employees in other states?
  • What polices affect a company my size?
  • At-will language weak / No arbitration policy
  • Vacation and PTO comparisons
  • Leave of absence policies aren’t listed as running concurrently
  • Harassment policy focuses on sexual harassment and excludes other forms of harassment
  • Volunteer firefighters, victims of domestic violence/sexual assault, victims of crime, lactation accommodation, literacy education

Whether you decide to “go it alone,” or ask us to review or develop your handbook, this will be time well-spent. If you do request Strategic HR’s additional services, your training fee will be applied to the service.
